Nissan may have given the Sentra a face-lift for the 2016 model year, but it hasn’t actually redesigned its compact sedan since model-year 2013. In that time, the competition has upped its game significantly, making it hard to justify recommending the Sentra to anyone. And while we had heard rumors that Nissan planned to introduce a new Sentra soon, we hadn’t yet seen prototypes. Until now.
On a recent photo shoot near the famous Angeles Crest Highway, our photographers spotted this camouflaged Sentra prototype parked completely out in the open. Despite the camo, you can make out all sorts of details from these photos. Perhaps most importantly, it’s clear the new Sentra will be a truly good-looking car with a sporty, coupe-like roofline. That will be a welcomed change from the current Sentra’s design, which is at best not unattractive.
Look more closely at the front, and you’ll see slim, angular headlights, a well-integrated version of Nissan’s latest corporate grille, and a sculpted hood. Further back, we see a lot of the current Maxima in the design, from the rear fenders to the floating C-pillar. The taillights may be different, but there’s no hiding the fact that this is a Nissan.
It also looks almost identical to the Chinese-market Sylphy that Nissan revealed in Shanghai last week. At the time, we assumed the new Sentra would look a lot like the Sylphy, but now we have confirmation. In a way, it’s a little disappointing to already know what the Sentra will look like by the time we see it. At the same time, we’re now much more interested in the reveal. When was the last time someone said that about the Nissan Sentra?
