If you enjoy riding mountain bikes—or like burly-looking family haulers—VW has an Atlas concept headed to the New York auto show that was made for you. Based on an Atlas SEL Premium, the modified SUV was designed with endurance mountain bikers in mind and features an Air Design custom body kit, a roof rack with bike mounts, and LED light bars up top and around back—and it’s been lifted, too.
The Basecamp features matte Platinum Gray and Black Uni paint, as well as orange accents. It packs the Atlas’ top-spec 3.6-liter V-6 engine, which delivers 276 hp and 266 lb-ft of torque and is mated to an eight-speed transmission and 4Motion all-wheel drive.
The H&R lift kit jacks up the three-row Atlas by 1.5 inches with a set of adjustable coil-overs; the whole package rolls on a set of black Fifteen52 Traverse MX Concept wheels wrapped in 265/70R17 BFGoodrich All-Terrain rubber. The Basecamp also brings along a friend in the form of a HIVE EX compact expedition trailer with matching wheels and tires.
The cool camper trailer has a queen-size bed, pullout canopy, and kitchenette with a stove, a sink, and a fridge. Additionally, there’s a self-contained water tank, propane tank, portable toilet, hot shower, and removable leveling jacks to help keep it planted.
If you miss VW’s concept at the New York show—it’ll also be at the SEMA show in Las Vegas in the fall—there’s a chance you’ll see us taking it out for a spin. Stay tuned.
