We have enjoyed getting to know our long-term Volvo XC60 over the past several months. Most things we like—including the powertrain and the overall design—and some things we don’t, namely the slow response of the infotainment system. Regardless, you can always count on the XC60 to be quirky and a little unexpected.
Read on to learn seven ways that the XC60 is just a bit different than many other small luxury crossovers.
It Offers a Powerful Plug-In Hybrid Powertrain
Our long-term XC60 features a 2.0-liter turbo-four making 250 hp. Volvo also offers a four-cylinder that makes 316 hp. But something you may not expect on the XC60 is a plug-in hybrid powertrain that pumps out 400 hp. We’ve tested this version hitting 60 mph in 5.4 seconds, which puts it on par with the Honda Civic Type R. Perhaps of greater significance, the model can travel 17 miles on electricity alone.
The Touchscreen Looks Like a Tablet
The 9.0-inch touchscreen is a bit unusual. Not only is it oriented vertically instead of horizontally, but it incorporates pretty much everything you need, including infotainment and climate controls. As a result, there are very few buttons on the dashboard. Although the screen can be slow to respond when you first start the car, we appreciate the crisp design.
Yes, That is the Ignition
You know how it goes on modern cars: push the button to start. Except with the XC60, you turn the ignition knob to the right. This knob is located below the shifter in a spot that is easy for the driver to reach.
Look! Hidden Storage Compartments Under the Rear Seats
There are discreet slots under the rear seats to fit small items. Volvo says it’s great for laptops or tablets. Just don’t forget to take these items with you when you leave!
It Shows its Swedish Heritage Inside
Look carefully at the side of your seat, and you’ll notice a little tag that bears the Swedish flag. If you look to the right side of the dashboard underneath the air vent, you’ll see another Swedish flag baked into the bright trim.
The XC60 Offers Excellent Visibility
Sometimes, automakers give their cars dramatic body lines so that they look good, and unfortunately, this can sacrifice visibility. This is not the case with Volvo and its XC60. We find it very easy to see out of the crossover, with no bulky pillars or raked roofline in the way. And it still looks great.
A Panoramic Moonroof is Standard
It’s time to go stargazing. The XC60 doesn’t just offer a panoramic moonroof, but it comes as standard equipment. Other standard features include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, dual-zone auto climate control, and Volvo’s signature Thor’s Hammer lights.
