The problem: Owners of these vehicles report a rubbing or squeaking noise emanating from the steering column when turning the steering wheel slowly. The noise intensifies as the vehicle is driven, especially in hot weather. This comes from the sealing sleeve/steering column opening in the firewall. Insufficient lubrication of the intermediate steering shaft in the area of the steering sleeve opening is the cause of this noise.
Corrective action: Technicians will spray a special lubricant on the intermediate steering shaft while adjusting it, making sure a tight fit is maintained. If the noise persists after performing this operation, techs will replace the intermediate steering shaft.
Warranty info: This repair is covered under the new car limited warranty or, if applicable, the certified pre-owned warranty. If an extended warranty is in place and the factory warranty has expired, the repair might be covered under that warranty.
What owners should do: Call your local dealer with your vehicle's identification number to determine if it's eligible for repairs under this service bulletin. You can call Audi directly at 800-822-2834 or NHTSA at 888-327-4236. Reference TSB No. 481566.
