Recall Alert: 2002-2005 Mini Cooper, Cooper S, and 2005 Cooper, Cooper S Convertible

Vehicles Affected: Approximately 86,000 model-year 2002-05 Mini Cooper and Cooper S cars, and model-year 2005 Cooper and Cooper S convertibles

The Problem: Temporary or permanent loss of the electro-hydraulic steering assistance will require extra steering effort at lower speeds, increasing the risk of a crash.

The Fix: Dealers will inspect the electro-hydraulic power steering system, and replace the components and wiring as necessary for free.

What Owners Should Do: Mini will begin notifying owners on Dec. 1. Owners can call the automaker at 866-825-1525, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236 or go to www.safercar.gov for more info.
