VW Launches VIN Tool for Diesel Owners

Volkswagen has updated vwdieselinfo.com, its consumer site for vehicles affected by the diesel crisis, with a vehicle identification number look-up tool to help VW and Audi diesel owners determine if their car is affected by the automaker's diesel scandal.

In the U.S., more than 480,000 Volkswagen and Audi four-cylinder diesel TDI cars have a "defeat device" that turned on full emissions controls only during emissions tests. The affected cars are the 2012-15 Volkswagen Beetle TDI, 2010-15 Golf TDI, 2009-15 Jetta TDI and 2010-15 Audi A3 TDI as well as the 2012-15 Volkswagen Passat TDI.

We tested VW's tool, entering in the VINs from two VW diesel cars affected by the scandal. Both VINs correctly showed that there's a service campaign on each vehicle. The site also noted for each that the car fails to comply with EPA and California Air Resources Board emissions regulations. Under the Remedy section, VW notes that it can't offer a "firm date now because we need to work on the remedy and review it with the government." The automaker also says that the affected cars may yet have a recall or a service action issued for it.
