The 2016 model's overall five-star rating is comprised of four stars in frontal and rollover testing and five stars in side crash tests. The new Prius also aced the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's crash tests, earning Top Safety Pick Plus status, the agency's top designation.

Neither NHTSA nor IIHS have tested the Prius' main competitor, the also-redesigned-for-2016 Chevrolet Volt. Another competitor, the 2016 Ford C-Max Hybrid, did not fare well in IIHS's challenging small front overlap test, precluding it from Top Safety Pick status. In NHTSA's testing, the C-Max earned an overall score of four stars.
