CARS.COM — Advanced safety features such as blind spot monitoring, forward collision warning and lane departure warning systems are just a few of the technologies in cars today that are paving the way toward autonomous cars in the future.
How do they work? The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's latest safety awareness campaign focuses on helping consumers understand these systems and their path toward autonomous vehicle development.

NHTSA and the Department of Transportation are working to advance safety features such as automatic emergency braking, which will become standard in cars by 2022, adaptive cruise control and more to save lives on the road.
There's more to autonomous cars than these safety features, however. NHTSA also is working to create a standard for vehicle-to-vehicle communication technology, which allows equipped cars to wirelessly "talk" to other equipped cars around them. This tech keeps cars in the know about the speeds and positions of the cars around them.
