Tech, Design Experts Talk Apple Car on New “Wide Open Throttle”

By now you’ve seen our speculative story on what the Apple Car could be. In it, we predict to the best of our ability how a vehicle from the Silicon Valley tech giant might look, drive, and interface with the driver. But are we right on the money or way off with our predictions? To find out, we brought together a panel of third-party experts from the tech and design worlds to discuss our vision of the Apple Car for an episode of “Wide Open Throttle.”

Gathered at the table we have Mikey Campbell, senior editor for AppleInsider; Tim Stevens, editor-in-chief for Roadshow by CNET; Tim Huntzinger, professor, Graduate Transportation Design, Art Center College of Design; Garret DeBry, industrial designer, Art Center College of Design graduate, and designer of our Apple Car; Kim Reynolds, Motor Trend testing director and author of the story; and Ed Loh, Motor Trend editor-in-chief and moderator for this discussion.

The chat begins with an explanation of how Reynolds, DeBry, and the others that collaborated on our speculative Apple Car arrived at its design. The process began with the user experience and worked its way out, which helps explain the car’s polarizing exterior styling. That egg-like shape makes the augmented reality windshield, double-wide gullwing doors, and ample interior headroom all possible. The guests weigh in with their opinions, pointing out what we got right and what we (probably) got wrong. From there, the conversation moves to interior packaging and design philosophy, then onto a potential real-life Apple Car’s business case and its chances of making it to market.

Do the experts agree with us? Hear the full discussion in the episode below.
