1 best of : Tesla Recalls 2,700 Model X SUVs Over Third-Row Seat Defect

Tesla will recall its Model X all-electric SUV because there’s a problem with the third-row seats. During a crash test for the European-spec version of the Tesla Model X, a seatback recliner latch failed, allowing the seatback to move forward during the simulated accident.

A Tesla spokesperson said the recall applies to 2,700 vehicles, all of which were built before March 26. There were no reports of the seat failure in any customer cars, and the third-row seats passed American crash tests without issue; in fact, Tesla said that 15 additional tests failed to replicate the seat failure issue. Nonetheless, the automaker is taking a proactive approach and will repair all customer cars as soon as possible. Tesla also said the seatback recliner was provided by an outside supplier, and that a fix is already available.

Until the recall repair can be made, the company is asking Tesla Model X owners to avoid having any passengers in the third row.

In an email sent to Model X owners, Tesla said, “We recognize that not having the use of your third row seats for the next few weeks will be an inconvenience, but your safety is our primary concern. We assure you that we are building your new seat backs as fast as we can.”

Tesla recently said it has been building about 750 Model X SUVs per week. The automaker is also working to launch its new, more affordable Model 3, which should start production next year.
