Nissan brought a special toy to the Nürburgring today. Ready to terrorize tracks around the world is the new 2017 Nissan GT-R NISMO, which should still be fast, but slightly more comfortable than before.
Godzilla often gains horsepower at the turn of a new model year, but that’s not the case with the 2017 GT-R NISMO. Like the 2016 model, its 3.8-liter twin-turbo V-6 is tuned to produce 600 hp and 481 lb-ft of torque. That’s still more than the standard GT-R, but the power gap between the two narrows, as the non-Nismo model makes slightly more power this year (565 hp and 467 lb-ft of torque). A six-speed dual-clutch automatic and Nissan’s fancy all-wheel-drive system is charged with putting that power to the ground.
In addition to its unique suspension tuning, the GT-R NISMO is fitted with a serious aero kit, lightweight forged-alloy RAYS wheels, and Recaro front seats. Its exterior design looks even more aggressive for the new model year. A stiffened chassis should also help the 2017 GT-R NISMO perform a tad better than its predecessor.
Like the standard GT-R, the NISMO version benefits from an revised interior with nicer materials, improved ergonomics, and a bigger infotainment screen. Contrast red accents are used throughout the cabin, including on the suede-like inserts for the Recaro seats. Nissan also simplified the center stack and made it more compact. The number of switches has been cut from 27 to just 11 on the new model.
It’d be a shame for Nissan to debut the GT-R NISMO at the ‘Ring and not get in a few laps, so stay tuned to find out how the slightly revised, hardcore version of Godzilla did around the track.
