Ostensibly because of tight budgets in the wake of its crushing diesel emissions scandal, Volkswagen Group subsidiaries Bentley and Lamborghini will not fly the flag at this year’s Paris auto show. The report comes from Reuters, which also states that Volkswagen is hard at work to save cash across the scope of its business in order to cover billions in fines and losses.
For its part the Volkswagen brand will keep its stand at the Paris show relatively conservative, focusing on executive speeches and static car displays rather than traditional auto show extravagance, says the report.
While this news is on the one hand yet another indicator of just how rough things are over at Volkswagen, Bentley and Lamborghini are hardly alone here. Auto shows have in recent years proven to be a hefty expense not to be taken lightly for a number of automakers, especially for high-end companies like Ferrari and Aston Martin, which can accomplish better outreach to their exclusive markets with more focused, private kinds of outreach.
Even Jaguar opted to skip the 2016 Detroit auto show this past January, stating it would direct its efforts toward other auto shows like New York and Geneva, which were better suited to its targets. Mini made similar choices, also opting out of Detroit and Geneva this year.
Aston won’t be present this year at Paris either, nor will Ford or Volvo, which will focus on emerging marketing strategies in place of the usual pomp and circumstance.
