Order Guide Reveals 2017 BMW 5 Series Gains More Semi-Autonomous Tech

Thanks to an order guide that has surfaced online, we now have a better idea of what to expect on the new BMW 5 Series. The model heads into production in November, according to the guide obtained by Bimmerpost.

Just like the new 3 Series, the 5 Series will ditch its old nomenclature; there’s no mention of the 528i and 535i trims. Instead, the order guide reveals standard features and options for the 530i, 530i xDrive, 540i, and 540i xDrive models. A 550i model is expected to launch in the spring, reports Bimmerpost.

The engine codes confirm the 5 Series will be offered with BMW’s new 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four cylinder engine and new 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six. Since the 340i sedan already has that latter engine, where it produces 320 hp, we can expect the 5 Series to receive a significant boost from its current 300-hp rating.

According to the guide, standard features on the lower 530i trim will include power front seats, sport seats, moonroof, LED headlights and foglights, navigation, and enhanced USB and Bluetooth with smartphone integration. More notably, the 530i and 540i will offer an extensive Driver Assistance Plus II package that brings the model one step closer to autonomous driving. It includes Active Lane Keeping Assistant with Side Collision Avoidance, which is also found on the new BMW 7 Series. The package also brings active cruise control with Stop & Go functionality and active driving assistant, traffic jam assist, and even active lane change.

Other packages available throughout the BMW 5 Series line include a cold weather package, lighting package, M Sport package, and “luxury” and “premium” packages. Two other driver assistance packages will also be available, which include more basic features like rearview camera, head-up display, park assist, pedestrian protection, lane departure warning, and front collision warning with city collision mitigation.

The order guide was created July 14, 2016, so it’s possible there could be a few changes to the options roster by the time the car goes on sale. Given that production starts in November, we expect to see the next-gen 5 Series soon.
