Buick has tweaked and pinched its largest vehicle to the point that, had we not been following the evolution of the brand’s design language on other new models, it looks unrecognizable from its predecessor. Not only does the 2018 Buick Enclave receive a brand new front fascia, but it also features a squared-off new body and a more refined interior. Plus, an upscale Avenir version adds extra cosmetic upgrades and luxuries much like Denali does for the GMC brand.
Perhaps the biggest changes to the second-generation Enclave happen up front. The model features a new grille lifted straight from the Buick LaCrosse and other models. A new horizontal wing connects the Buick emblem to the edges of the grille, and the headlights are much narrower now as well. The slats in the grille appear thinner than the slats on the grille of the old model, and new Avenir models feature a unique 3D mesh grille pattern.
The Enclave also boasts thicker silver garnish at the bottom of the doors, and a vent in between the hood and front door provides additional flourish. Avenir models feature special “Avenir” badging. The appearance of the D-pillar has also changed to emphasize the model’s sloped roofline. Unlike on the old model, the silver trim framing the side windows does not connect together on the new Enclave. Also notice the larger rear window spoiler.
When it comes to the taillights, the new look is much more modern. Eschewing the round taillights of the old model, the new Enclave features slimmer units. These units are integrated into a new silver bar that runs across the width of the rear. Buick also completely redesigned the bumper, and overall, the SUV looks much boxier in the rear.
Inside, the three-row crossover boasts a new frameless 8-inch infotainment screen, a welcome departure from the old screen framed by an assault of buttons and knobs. The gearshift, dashboard, and just about everything else have been redesigned. Standard features on the new Enclave include keyless entry with push-button start, tri-zone auto climate control, six USB ports, and a hands-free liftgate, while Avenir models receive especially luxurious materials in addition to special wheels.
What do you think of Buick’s new full-size crossover?
