Saleen Automotive Debuts Championship Edition Mustang

Tumultuous is the only way to describe Saleen’s recent history. The once great Mustang tuner was at the top of its game until everything came crumbling down and the company filed for bankruptcy.

Then, in 2016, a still defiant Saleen rose again with a new Mustang and seven special-edition S7 LM supercars, but the company continued to struggle.

Now, the company is back with a new special-edition Mustang to commemorate the company’s racing history and partnership with General Tire.

To celebrate the 30-year anniversary of when Saleen and General Tire won the 1987 Driver, Manufacturer, Team, and Tire SCCA ESCORT Endurance Championships, Saleen has partnered with the tire company once again to provide customers with a unique race- and street-spec limited-edition Ford Mustang that also replicates the winning car’s livery. Only 30 units will be built, each with a price tag that starts at $87,000.

In addition to the nifty old-school paint scheme and low production numbers, the special-edition Saleens are outfitted with the company’s 3.2-liter liquid cooled supercharger that’s tuned to produce between 730 and 750 hp depending on whether you check the option box for street or track.

It also gets a new exhaust system and a competition short-throw shifter, at least in the street-spec cars. The track-spec Mustangs will see all the goodies mentioned above, as well as a rear-seat delete, four-point racing harnesses, a four-point roll cage, and upgraded radiator to chill that massive supercharged V-8.

Each car, both street and track, will also see the same historic race livery, a set of white wheels with yellow, black, and white Saleen graphics, and special badging. Lastly, the Mustang’s suspension has been upgraded with Racecraft Suspension with special camber caster plates.

Production of the General Tire Limited Edition Saleen Mustang will begin this September. The special-edition Saleen will make its public debut this month, though no exact date has been set. For now, we’ll just keep our fingers crossed and hope for the best.
