Subaru WRX STI Type RA NBR Special Will Attempt to set a ‘Ring Record

Subaru has been teasing some new vehicles ahead of a June 8 debut, and now we know what one of them is. The Japanese automaker announced that it built a WRX STI Type RA NBR Special to attempt a new lap record around Germany’s infamous Nürburgring.

The Type RA badge has appeared on many previous WRX models, and stands for “record attempt” or “rally applicant” depending on model and intended purpose (in this case it’s probably the former). The NBR undoubtedly stands for Nürburgring, as Subaru is gunning for the four-door sedan lap record at the challenging track this summer. In the video below, we can see that this is essentially a race car, complete with an adjustable rear wing, massive front splitter and rear diffuser, and minimal ground clearance. Subaru also released a teaser image showing the car’s carbon-fiber roof.

But the WRX isn’t the only car Subaru has been teasing. The automaker released another teaser image earlier this week, and contrary to what some other outlets have reported, we still believe it shows a BRZ – not this tuned Impreza. Compare the wing in the video with the one in the teaser and it’s clear they’re completely different. Also, in the teaser image you can see a taillight lens protruding beyond the bodywork, whereas with a WRX the lamps are nearly flush. We didn’t have a BRZ in our parking lot to confirm, but we did have a similar-enough Scion FR-S (belonging to Super Street’s Jofel Tolosa). We matched up the two cars as close as we could below. Take a look and decide for yourself.

Subaru says we can expect more details on the WRX STI Type RA NBR Special on June 8, and we believe we’ll also get details on a new BRZ variant. Stay tuned.
