New Global Ford Focus: Five Things You Need to Know

The Ford Focus is turning 20 and receiving quite a few gifts for its birthday. As it enters its fourth generation, the Focus sits on a new platform and receives new technologies you’d expect on a more premium vehicle. We won’t know specifics about the U.S.-spec car until closer to its on-sale date in the second half of 2019, but for now, here are five important things to know about the small car that goes on sale in Europe and China this year.

The design has changed, but its dimensions are largely the same

To reduce complexity among its vehicles, Ford will simplify its lineup with globally common architectures and modules. The Focus is the first vehicle to embrace this new strategy. Sitting on a new platform, the Focus has a longer wheelbase that should open up more space for backseat passengers. While the exterior dimensions haven’t changed much, the car gets a larger grille and longer hood for a more aggressive look. Globally, it will be available in sedan, wagon, and hatchback variants.

Ford promises improved responsiveness and aerodynamics

Thanks to a new chassis and suspension, the fourth-gen Focus promises a 20 percent improvement in torsional rigidity compared to its predecessor and a weight reduction of 110 pounds on average. Ford also says it improved the car’s steering feel with a new electric-assisted steering system. In addition, Ford also made the Focus more aerodynamic, with the five-door boasting a drag coefficient of 0.273.

It receives a head-up display

Head-up displays are no longer relegated to luxury vehicles, so it makes sense the Focus has this feature. Ford claims the model has the widest and brightest head-up display on the market.

Look for wireless charging and connectivity for 10 devices

Drivers can charge their mobile devices on a new charging pad located under the instrument panel. An embedded modem turns the Focus into a mobile WiFi hotspot that provides connectivity for up to 10 different devices.

There are new driver assistance technologies, including a fully automated parking feature

Depending on the market, the Focus will feature a fully automated parking system that controls acceleration, braking, and gear selection while pulling into a spot. Other driver assistance technologies include new adaptive headlights that illuminate a corner before you enter it, and evasive steering assist, which helps drivers steer around slower vehicles to avoid accidents.
