Report: Production Ram Rebel TRX to Get Two Engines, Different Names

Back in 2016, Ram showed off the Hellcat-powered Rebel TRX at the State Fair of Texas. While technically a concept, we had a feeling it wouldn’t be long before Ram announced production plans for the high-powered off-road truck. So when rumors started to spread and inside sources told us it was happening, we weren’t surprised. But what we didn’t expect was for Ram to offer multiple versions of the Rebel TRX.

According to two reports from the fan forum 5thGenRams, not only will the Rebel TRX go into production, it will come with multiple engine choices. One is said to be the Hellcat’s supercharged 6.2-liter V-8. The standard engine, however, will reportedly be a naturally aspirated 7.0-liter V-8 known internally as the Banshee. And while the former will probably still be called the TRX, the latter may simply be called the TR.

Expect the Banshee-powered Rebel TR to make about 520 hp and 525 lb-ft of torque, with the Hellcat-powered TRX cranking out 707 hp and 645 lb-ft of torque. There’s a chance engineering issues could force Ram to lower those figures, but it sounds like the goal is for the TRX to match the Trackhawk’s power output.

The report didn’t include any information on pricing or possible suspension differences between the two trucks, but it did say the TR and TRX will go on sale for the 2021 model year. That likely means we won’t see an official announcement until next year, but we have a feeling a Hellcat-powered Ram Rebel will be worth the wait.
