2020 Hyundai Sonata Looks Significantly More Upscale

Hyundai told us earlier this year that its next-generation Sonata wouldn’t be instantly recognizable as a Hyundai. Instead, the automaker focused on creating a more appealing and progressive design than the current model. Now the new Sonata has shown its face, and we can say Hyundai has accomplished its goal.

The 2020 Hyundai Sonata is longer, lower, and wider than its predecessor. But the size change is subtle; length has grown 1.8 inches, while height has decreased 1.2 inches and width has increased by just under an inch. Hyundai extended the wheelbase by 1.4 inches.

The Sonata receives a new grille and new daytime running lights with Hidden Lighting Lamps. These lights shine brightly when turned on but blend into the design of the car when turned off. The lights run through two chromic lines on the car, which travel all the way back to the windows. In the rear, you’ll notice new full-width taillights and a bold window spoiler.

Inside the cabin, Hyundai reworked the entire dashboard. The Sonata has a new central screen with capacitive touch buttons, updated climate control knobs and switches, and an electronic shifter. Satin chrome accents adorn the steering wheel, and mood lighting will be available.

As we reported earlier, Hyundai is working to rebrand itself as more emotional and sporty, while still retaining its value proposition. The Sonata’s design was inspired by the dramatic Le Fil Rouge concept shown at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show.

Hyundai hasn’t announced powertrain options. It’s possible that the midsizer will keep its 2.4-liter and the 2.0-liter four-cylinder engines and drop the 1.6-liter. Hyundai could introduce an N performance variant with a 2.5-liter turbo engine. Hybrids and plug-ins are expected to be part of the mix.
