While sister brand Volkswagen introduces an electric SUV concept at the Shanghai auto show, Audi will debut an autonomous car concept. And judging from this preliminary sketch, it will look as quirky as other autonomous vehicles we’ve seen lately.
The concept, dubbed AI:me, looks like a mix of a sedan and crossover, at least in these renderings. Instead of lots of buttons inside the cabin, you’ll find layered displays, with programs for “well-being” and “moment,” whatever those are. On the driver’s door, you’ll find capacitive touch controls and a charging indicator.
“The showcar illustrates the vision of an automated driving compact car for the megacities of tomorrow,” Audi says in a press release.
Audi has made practical strides when it comes to autonomous technology. Equipped with a Traffic Jam Pilot feature, the A8 became the world’s first SAE Level 3 self-driving car. Mercedes won’t introduce Level 3 technology until 2020, with BMW following close behind in 2021.
Meanwhile, Audi is readying a fully autonomous mobility service for 2021, via its Autonomous Intelligent Driving subsidiary. This is all possible thanks to the heavy emphasis Volkswagen Group has put on electric mobility and self-driving cars. The automotive conglomerate will invest around 44 billion Euros ($49 billion) in these areas by 2023.
