Having just received a substantial refresh for the 2015 model year, the popular CR-V SUV is back for 2016 virtually unchanged but for the addition of the new Special Edition trim. The automaker says the CR-V's SE version offers exterior and security upgrades, slotting between the base LX and EX among the six available trim levels.

The 2016 CR-V starts at $24,475 for the base LX with front-wheel drive, rising to $25,275 for the SE, $26,725 for the EX, $29,175 for the EX-L, $30,675 for the EX-L Navi and $32,825 for the top-level Touring trim. That's a $150 price bump at the low end and $300 at the high compared with 2015 prices. All prices include an $880 destination charge; all-wheel drive costs an additional $1,300 across all trims.
The new SE adds 17-inch alloy wheels, a trim-specific two-tone finish, second-row and rear privacy glass, and a security system, all for $800 over the LX. The returning powertrain on all versions is the 2.4-liter four-cylinder from the 2015 model, which makes 185 horsepower and 181 pounds-feet of torque and is mated to a continuously variable automatic transmission. The 2016 front-wheel-drive version's 26/33/29 mpg city/highway/combined loses 1 mpg in fuel economy in both its city and highway estimates compared with the 2015 model, though its combined figure remains the same.
Inside is a 7-inch touch-screen, with the Display Audio multimedia interface standard on the EX and above. Available multimedia features include HondaLink smartphone integration, navigation, Pandora interface, hands-free text messaging and Bluetooth connectivity. Available advanced safety features include Honda LaneWatch, forward collision warning, precollision braking, lane keep assist and lane departure warning.
Safety ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration have not yet been assessed for 2016. The 2015 version received IIHS' highest designation, Top Safety Pick Plus, and an overall safety rating of four out of five stars from NHTSA.
