CARS.COM — The redesigned GMC Acadia may have sacrificed some size for the 2017 model year, but it hasn't sacrificed safety. The midsize SUV has repeated its full-size predecessor's success in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's crashworthiness tests, earning a Five-Star Safety Rating.

NHTSA awards an overall score of up to five stars based on a vehicle's performance in frontal crash, side crash and rollover evaluations. Both the front- and all-wheel-drive versions of the Acadia earned five stars for frontal crashes and side crashes, and four stars for rollovers, for an overall score of five stars. Those scores are identical to the 2016 Acadia's NHTSA crashworthiness ratings.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has not yet tested the 2017 Acadia and the 2016 version did not receive a Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick Plus designation. While it got scores of good in moderate overlap, side, roof strength, and head restraints and seats crash tests, and basic for its available front crash warning, it was not tested for the small overlap front crash.
Among competitors, the Acadia's safety marks are, well, competitive. The 2016 Ford Explorer received the same scores as the Acadia in each NHTSA crash-test category for an overall score of five. The 2016 Honda Pilot also received a five-star overall score, but with scores of four in both the frontal-crash and rollover categories, as well as a score of five for side crashes.
