Mercedes Offers New 'Bargain' AMG GT — If You Can Live With Leatherette

CARS.COM — Mercedes-AMG has announced a new base AMG GT for 2017, going on sale this summer for "just" $112,125 with a destination charge and slotting below the 2017 version of the GT S, the only current model. They'll be joined in the U.S. in the middle of 2017 by a new flagship, the just-unveiled 577-horsepower GT R version.

Of course even an AMG supercar shopper has to make some compromises for a bargain: The proletarian version has leatherette upholstery versus the GT S version's Nappa leather — though the high-grade MB-Tex vinyl is, well, the Mercedes-Benz of pleather. The GT model also foregoes the Burmester premium audio (optional) and gets mundane silver brake calipers rather than red. Oh, and you'll have to get by with just 456 hp from the biturbo 4.0-liter V-8.

Spending 20 grand more for the 2017 GT S ($132,125) gets you a 503-hp version of that engine, a Race driving mode and AMG's adaptive suspension and exhaust — though the latter two are optional on the GT. The S version price is up $1,400 from the 2016 model. Otherwise there are few changes from 2016 beyond a new Black Diamond interior trim and a new Aerodynamic Package with a fixed rear spoiler.

Wanna spend more now rather than wait for the yet-unpriced, higher-end and higher-performance GT R? GT and GT S options for both include ceramic brakes, darkened chrome, an Exterior Carbon Fiber Package and panoramic moonroof.
