2019 Kia Optima Adds Even More Standard Safety Features

The current Kia Optima might not be as much of a game changer as the 2011 Optima was, but with a long warranty and an impressive list of features, it’s still a solid value. Unfortunately, due to declining sedan sales and stronger competition from Honda, Toyota, and Nissan, the Optima has struggled to compete. In an attempt to correct that, Kia updated the Optima for 2019, tweaking the design and adding even more safety features.

As you can see, Kia hasn’t done too much with the Optima’s appearance. Base models get new LED running lights, a slightly different grille, and new 16-inch wheels, while higher trims add similar lighting, wheel, and other exterior updates. EX, SX, and SX-L models now get standard adaptive cruise control and some minor interior upgrades. The SX can also now be ordered with optional red and black leather sports seats. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are still standard.

The biggest upgrade for 2019, however, is to the list of standard safety features. A driver assistance package is now included on every Optima, offering a driver attention monitor, automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, lane keep assist, and lane departure warning. The lane keep assist sounds fairly basic, so don’t expect it to keep the car centered in its lane on the highway, but for a package of standard safety features, it’s still impressive.

Kia hasn’t said when the 2019 Optima will go on sale or how pricing will change, but expect that to be announced soon.
