U.S.-Spec 2019 Hyundai Kona Electric to Travel 250 Miles on a Charge

The 2019 Hyundai Kona Electric goes on sale in the U.S. later this year, and if the automaker’s estimates are correct, it will boast more range than the Chevrolet Bolt.

Hyundai estimates a 250-mile range for the U.S.-spec model. That’s considerably ahead of the Bolt’s 238-mile range confirmed by the EPA. The Nissan Leaf only gets 151 miles to a charge, although a longer-range version should achieve about 225 miles.

The Kona Electric uses an electric motor and a 64-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery to produce a total system output of 201 hp and 291 lb-ft of torque. Yes, it’s more powerful than the gas model. Recharging the EV’s battery to 80 percent takes about 54 minutes with a 100-kW DC fast charger. With a Level II charger, it takes 9 hours and 35 minutes to juice up.

Standard features on the Kona include 17-inch alloy wheels, a 7-inch screen, and forward collision avoidance system with autonomous braking. Other available features include an 8-inch navigation unit, head-up display, wireless device charging, lane keep assist, rear cross-traffic collision avoidance assist, and more. Channeling the Kia Soul EV, the Kona Electric can be had with a two-tone color scheme. A white roof can be paired to black, gray, and white exterior color choices. The Kona Electric also features solid colors black, white, red, blue, and gray.

Despite its electric bits, the Kona Electric boasts the same 19.2 cubic feet of cargo volume as the gas-powered Kona. The cabin is laid out in the same way as the standard Kona as well.

The 2019 Hyundai Kona makes its U.S. debut at the New York auto show. Arriving in the fourth quarter of 2018, the Kona will initially land in California. Then, the model will expand to other EV-hot states in the western and northeastern portions of the U.S.
