Bentley is looking to prove the Bentayga is faster than any other production SUV to climb Pikes Peak, but that’s not the only statement it wants to make at the hill climb event. Bentley’s entry will catch a few eyes with its “Radium Satin” paint job, black chrome accents, and a full carbon-fiber body kit.
This SUV is as close to production standard as possible, Bentley says, featuring an unmodified W-12 engine making 600 hp. Also unchanged is the car’s air suspension and 48V electric active anti-roll control system. To prepare it for the race, however, Bentley had to put in the usual safety equipment including a full roll cage, fire suppression system, racing seats, and harnesses. It also features a custom exhaust system from Akrapovic, which also made the unique exhaust for the Bentley Continental GT3-R.
Behind the wheel will sit Rhys Millen, who has scored five overall victories in the Pikes Peak hill climb over the years. To set a new record, Millen will have to achieve a faster time than 12:35.61 in the race. This record was set by Paul Dallenbach in a Range Rover Sport back in 2013.
But Millen is no stranger to records. In the 2016 Pikes Peak hill climb, for example, he set a new record for the fastest time in an electric vehicle, coming in at 8:57.118.
This year marks the first time Bentley is competing in the event, which takes place June 24. The route is 12.42 miles long with 156 hair-raising corners. During the competition, vehicles climb 4,720 feet to the finish line at the top of the mountain’s summit of 14,115 feet.
