Ford is Recalling the Fusion Because the Steering Wheel Could Fall Off

The second-generation Ford Fusion might not be as fresh as the latest entries from Honda and Toyota, but it’s still a solid car. The 325-hp Fusion Sport is also the only car in its class that pairs a V-6 with all-wheel drive. That said, if you own a second-gen Ford Fusion, you should definitely check to see if it’s part of Ford’s latest recall. Otherwise, the steering wheel might just fall off.

The Problem: According to Ford, the steering wheel bolts used in the affected vehicles may slowly loosen over time. If those bolts get loose enough, the steering wheel could detach from the steering column. Ford says it’s only aware of this happening twice, but the danger the issue poses on the road is serious.

The Fix: Dealers will remove the old steering wheel bolt and replace it with a new one. This new bolt is longer and features a larger nylon patch that should help it stay tight. As with all recalls, the fix is provided to owners of affected vehicles for free.

Number of Vehicles Potentially Affected: This recall includes 2014-2017 model year Fusions built at Ford’s Flat Rock Assembly Plant, 2014-2018 model year Fusions built at the Hermosillo Assembly Plant, and 2014-18 model year Lincoln MKZs also built in Hermosillo. In total, about 1.3 million cars may have loose steering bolts. To see if your car is affected, check your VIN using the NHTSA’s recall checker tool.
