When Mercedes-Benz turned the GL into the GLS, it gave its largest SUV a refresh to go with its new name. The problem is, an updated look and some extra features can’t hide the fact that the GLS needs a full redesign. Based on these new spy photos, it looks like Mercedes is hard at work giving the SUV exactly that.
According to our spy photographer, the prototype seen here is most likely the AMG-tuned GLS63. Looking at the large air intakes up front and the huge brake discs peeking out through the wheels, we’re inclined to agree. It lacks the quad exhaust you’d expect from AMG, but considering how heavy the camouflage is, we’re probably looking at a pretty early prototype here. Look closely, and you can also make out a modern Panamericana-style grille.
If the 2019 Mercedes-AMG G63 is any indication, the new GLS63 will make 577 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque from AMG’s 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8. But since Mercedes has said it wants the GLS to be the S-Class of full-size SUVs, there’s a good chance the new GLS63’s interior design will look a lot more like what we saw in the 2018 Mercedes-AMG S63 that we tested recently.
Even though we expect the redesigned GLS to debut as early as next year, Mercedes hasn’t said much about its upcoming full-size SUV. All we really know is that there will be an ultra-luxurious Maybach version aimed at the Bentley Bentayga and the Rolls-Royce Cullinan. But if Mercedes thinks the new GLS will be worthy of the Maybach name, it’s probably safe to assume the regular GLS will be pretty swanky, as well.
