The problem: The front passenger seat assembly is equipped with sensors that classify the weight of the occupant and activate (or deactivate) the airbag accordingly. Additionally, the sensors are used to detect certain vehicle collisions. Due to some of those collision-detection thresholds, the system may interpret certain occupant seating or road conditions as a rear collision and illuminate the airbag warning light and Airbag Off indicator, disabling the front passenger airbag. In the event of a collision, this could result in front-seat occupant injury.
Corrective action: Dealers will replace the front passenger seat occupation sensors and, in some cases, replace the occupant classification system electronic control unit.
Warranty info: This repair is being done free of charge under a limited service campaign and is available to owners until Dec. 31, 2017.
