Study Reveals Most Congested Highways in the U.S.

Just in time for the holiday season, when traffic anxiety reaches its boiling point, a new study has come out revealing the most congested highways in the U.S. While Los Angeles eats up more spots on the list than any other locale, it cedes the No. 1 spot to a city with an even busier freeway.

The study was released this week by the American Highway Users Alliance, a nonprofit group advocating for increased interstate highway funding. To identify the most congested cities, the study looks at stretches of highways that are continually congested, not just those that are busy during peak periods. Of the top 30 most congested cities on the list, 11 are in the Greater Los Angeles area.

The worst traffic-clogged freeway in California, and the second most congested freeway in the entire U.S., is the 405 freeway between the 22 and 605 in Long Beach. According to the study, that 4.1-mile stretch is responsible for 7.1 million hours of delays each year and $191 million in lost value of time. Not far behind is the stretch between the 10 freeway between Santa Fe Avenue and Crenshaw Boulevard (No. 3) and the famous squeeze of the 405 between Venice and Wilshire (No. 4). Coming in at No. 5 is the 101 freeway between Franklin Avenue and Glendale Boulevard.

But which city earns the dubious honor of hosting the most congested freeway in the U.S.? That award goes to Chicago. Eating up 16.9 million hours and $418 million in lost income per year, the stretch on the 90 freeway between Roosevelt Road and North Nagle Avenue is officially the nation’s biggest bottleneck. Other cities that made the traffic-shaming list include Austin, Boston, Dallas, New York, Miami, San Francisco, and Seattle.
