For years, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class has been the gold standard of luxury flagship sedans. There have been many attempts to usurp the luxury king, but the S-Class has always come out on top. The sixth-generation BMW 7 Series is the latest to challenge the Mercedes for its throne, and hosts Jonny Lieberman and Jason Cammisa find out if it has a chance on this episode of “Head 2 Head.”
The comparison begins with a “Grease”-style drag race along the L.A. river. The BMW 750i xDrive is powered by a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 making 445 hp and 480 lb-ft of torque, while the S550 4Matic makes 449 hp and 516 lb-ft from it twin-turbo 4.7-liter V-8. Despite the S-Class’ power advantage, the BMW emerges the victor, but both hosts admit that luxury flagship customers don’t care about quarter-mile times. So Lieberman and Cammisa hit the streets to evaluate the things buyers do care about.
Those things include interior design, comfort, ride quality, and convenience features, among other things. Both cars score high in these areas, but there’s a very clear winner by the end. Find out which luxury cruiser reigns supreme in the episode below.
