You Can Now Command Your Genesis G80, G90 via Amazon’s Alexa

The connected car is about to meet the connected home, as Hyundai’s Genesis brand has paired with Amazon to allow G80 and G90 owners to control their cars via their Amazon Echo, Tap, Echo Dot, or Fire TV devices. The voice commands are relayed through the Alexa virtual assistant service.

The Amazon Alexa skill for Genesis gives owners the power to remote start their car, adjust the climate control, lock or unlock the car, or use the lights and horn from inside the house by giving Alexa, Amazon’s answer to Apple’s Siri, specific voice commands. The Alexa app must first be paired with an owner’s Genesis Connected Services account, and voice commands require a personal identification number before they can be sent to the car. Genesis G90 buyers receive an Amazon gift card that can be applied to the purchase of an Amazon Echo.

Genesis says it’s the first automaker to launch Amazon Alexa functionality in a car, but it’s not the first to collaborate with the online retail giant. Earlier this year, Ford tested Amazon Echo functions linked with the automaker’s Sync system. In addition to being able to control the car from inside the home, Ford’s Alexa integration would allow drivers to control smart home functions like unlocking doors, turning on lights, and opening the garage from inside the car. It’s unclear if Ford is still pursuing this feature for consumer rollout.
