As a Porsche fetishist, I’ve enjoyed seeing the Porsche 918 Spyder sit at the top of the Nürburgring lap record list. Porsche has remained in this top-dog spot since late 2013, as Ferrari and McLaren never officially released lap times for the P1 and LaFerrari. Now, that time in the sun might be over. According to a report from Autocar, the maniacs behind the street-legal McLaren P1 LM are contemplating an attempt on Stuttgart’s crown.
McLaren has run the P1 on the ‘Ring, but has refrained from releasing any official times, only confirming a sub-seven minute lap. If the “run-of-the-mill” P1 was hot enough to break the vaunted seven-minute barrier, then the wilder P1 GTR should absolutely massacre the 12-mile circuit.
Of course, the GTR isn’t street legal. It’s essentially McLaren’s response to the mental LaFerrari FXX K, and serves as a hyper-exclusive track toy for bored billionaires. However, if you’ve got the coin and the nerve, longtime McLaren partner and race-prepper Lanzante will convert just five GTRs into street-legal weapons dubbed the P1 LM.
Autocar says that setting a world record on the ‘Ring isn’t the priority, but would be icing on the cake. Lanzante plans for general ‘Ring testing to finalize its product, and if the conditions are right, the 918 might be kicked off the throne. However, given the cost and complexity of the process, the team remains cautious.
“We don’t have the finances or the time to do something like Porsche,” Dean Lanzante told Autocar. “If it rains, the track isn’t fast enough, so we can’t do a lap. And we don’t want to do a Koenigsegg…”
After months of preparation and planning, Koenigsegg recently saw its sole One:1 hypercar totaled on the Nürburgring as it geared-up for a record-setting run earlier this year. The company announced it will rebuild the car.
The insane McLaren P1 LM begins development testing on the Nürburgring later this year.
