2017 GMC Canyon Gets Eight-Speed Auto, New All Terrain X Rrim

GM announced specs for the 2017 Chevrolet Colorado last week, and now the automaker has details on its sister truck, the 2017 GMC Canyon. Not surprisingly, the GMC version gets many of the same mechanical updates as the Colorado, including a revised 3.6-liter V-6 and new eight-speed automatic transmission, but the Canyon also receives a new All Terrain X trim level.

Like the Colorado, the 2017 Canyon’s optional 3.6-liter V-6 gains variable valve timing, revised direct injection, and cylinder deactivation for gains of 3 hp an 6 lb-ft of torque, bringing output to 308 hp and 275 lb-ft. Meanwhile, GM’s ubiquitous Hydra-Matic 8L45 eight-speed automatic replaces the previous six-speed. The V-6 and eight-speed combo is rated at 7,000 pounds max trailering capacity, which is second in class only to the available 2.8-liter Duramax turbodiesel’s tow rating of 7,700 pounds.

Also new is an All Terrain X model, which builds on the popular All Terrain package offered on the Canyon SLE. GM says the 2017 Canyon All Terrain X will be the most off-road-capable model in the lineup, with its Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac 255/65R17 all-terrain tires. In addition, the All Terrain X receives an off-road suspension, transfer case shield, Hill Descent Control feature, spray-on bedliner, 3-inch step bars, all-weather floor liners, a body-color grille, and unique 17-inch alloy wheels.

The 2017 GMC Canyon Denali, revealed late last year, will be the more premium offering in the Canyon lineup with its exclusive interior trim, unique chrome grille, tubular running boards, spray-on bedliner, and unique 20-inch black-accented alloy wheels. Among the Denali’s upscale interior appointments are a heated steering wheel, GM’s IntelliLink infotainment system with navigation, a 4G Wi-Fi hotspot, Bose seven-speaker premium audio system, and two USB ports for the rear seats. The Denali model also comes standard with Forward Collision Alert and Lane Departure Warning.

The 2017 GMC Canyon arrives on dealer lots in the fourth quarter of this year.
