Tesla Says New Model S P100D Ludicrous Will Go 0-60 MPH in 2.5 Seconds

Tesla today announced a battery upgrade for the Model S and Model X that increases range and makes both EVs even quicker than before.

As its name suggests, the Tesla Model S P100D with Ludicrous mode is fitted with a 100-kilowatt-hour battery, which increases the sedan’s total range to an EPA-estimated 315 miles. Tesla says it’ll be the first EV to crest the 300-mile benchmark. For comparison, the Model S 90D is EPA-rated at 294 miles of range, while the P90D returns 270 miles.

Tesla also says the battery upgrade drops the sedan’s 0-60 mph time to an estimated 2.5 seconds. The automaker claims the Model S P100D with Ludicrous mode is now the world’s quickest production car, seeing as how the Porsche 918 Spyder and Ferrari LaFerrari are no longer in production. We have no reason to doubt the claimed time, either. Our test of a Model S P90D Ludicrous, saw a 0-60 mph time of 2.6 seconds, which was just two-tenths of a second behind the 918 Spyder and the LaFerrari. Tesla didn’t disclose how much power the electric motors are making.

When it comes to the Model X crossover, the upgraded battery pack with Ludicrous mode should net an estimated 289 miles per charge (versus 250 miles for the Model X P90D). Tesla says the Model X P100D Ludicrous should go from 0-60 mph in an estimated 2.9 seconds, which is 0.3 second quicker than the Model X P90D Ludicrous we last tested.

Current Tesla owners can upgrade to the new battery pack, but it won’t be cheap. Tesla says P90D Ludicrous models currently on order (but not built) can be upgraded to the 100-kW-hr battery for $10,000, while those already on the ground will necessitate $20,000 due to the added cost of recycling the old battery pack.
