Styling Size-Up: 2017 Alfa Romeo Giulia Vs. the Competition

After plenty of delays, the 2017 Alfa Romeo Giulia finally hits dealerships this month. The long-awaited Giulia brings a fresh design interpretation to the luxury sedan segment, but is it the best looking of its competitors? Let’s examine.

It could be argued that the Giulia has the most pleasing lines of its rivals, from the dynamic creases on the hood to the frames around the front grille. Speaking of the grille, the three-vent design makes the Italian sedan stand out from some of its most stylish competitors—the BMW 3 Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, and Jaguar XE—all of which feature a clear separation between their upper and lower grilles. While the Giulia is more fluid in form, the BMW and Jaguar show off a starker look with narrow headlights and squared-off grilles.

The Giulia is almost exactly the same length as the 3 Series and slightly shorter than the C-Class and XE. Rounded yet compact, the Giulia has noticeably short overhangs, and the rear forms a nice little lip. The Alfa can also be had with special five-hole wheels and hood vents, upping its game a little more.

In the rear, the Alfa Giulia is surprisingly subtle. But C-shaped taillights add some visual interest, as do the large tailpipe units.

Inside the cabin, there are very few extraneous buttons and knobs, unlike the BMW and Jaguar. The interior is clean and simple, drawing attention to the sculpted lines of the dashboard. A frameless infotainment screen is an interesting substitution for the standalone screens you see on many of today’s other luxury vehicles. Meanwhile, leather is standard on all Giulia models.

Last week, we asked for your thoughts on the all-new 2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe, and the feedback was mostly positive.

“At last a proper E coupe, missing since C124,” wrote Rudi Sanjaya.

“Looks appropriately like a shrunken down S coupe without the stubbiness of the C-Class,” noted Paul Patterson.

_E60_ had mixed feelings: “The previous E coupe has aged pretty well on the outside. I will definitely miss its sharper lines compared to the new one. As for the new interior, that aspect is hands down refreshing.”
