2019 Hyundai Kona Electric Range Officially Rated at 258 Miles

Earlier this year, Hyundai announced plans to sell an electric version of the Kona subcompact crossover. Initially, the Kona Electric was only offered in Europe, but Hyundai soon confirmed plans to bring it to the U.S., as well. Like other electric vehicles, though, the big question with the Kona Electric was what kind of range it would have. As of today, that question has been answered.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the Hyundai Kona Electric has an official range of 258 miles. That’s less than the 292-mile range Europe’s Worldwide Harmonized Light-duty Vehicles Test Procedure estimated the Kona Electric offered, but it’s likely closer to what owners will get in real-world driving. For comparison, that’s more than the Chevrolet Bolt’s 238 miles and the Nissan Leaf’s 150 miles, but shorter than the long-range Tesla Model 3’s 310 miles.

With a 64-kWh battery and a single electric motor making 201 hp and 290 lb-ft of torque, the Kona Electric is actually more powerful than the gas-powered version. On a 100-kW DC fast charger, Hyundai says the Kona Electric will hit an 80-percent charge in less than an hour. It can also be had with a number of tech features such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support, a head-up display, lane keep assist, and adaptive cruise control.

The U.S.-spec Kona Electric will go on sale later this year, arriving first in California before spreading to other markets. Expect pricing to be announced closer to the Kona Electric’s on-sale date.
