Sometimes you see a car, and there’s no question: It’s rolling art, often with a detail or two that stands out. We picked 10 design elements that were carefully made and are significant because they have no reason to be so beautiful. Enjoy.
Porsche 918 Spyder
When the Porsche 918 Spyder isn’t whispering along in electric mode, the 4.6-liter V-8 sends its race-inspired cacophony skyward through this pair of sculpted exhaust pipes that exit through the engine cover hatch.
Mercedes-AMG GT S
The cascading center stack of the Mercedes-AMG GT S can be finished in a silver chrome and terminates at an armrest finished in fine leather that’s embossed with the Affalterbach crest.
Aston Martin Vanquish
The Aston Martin Vanquish has a boomerang-shaped pair of taillights that are equal parts style and function.
Porsche 911 Targa 4S
The Porsche 911 Targa 4S is a rolling homage to the 911’s heritage, and with a brushed aluminum roll bar it looks like a modern take on the old classic.
Aston Martin
We’ve pictured the Aston Martin Vanquish again, but this time it’s the buttons we’re after: Instead of glossy black plastic or colored buttons, Aston Martin has glass buttons on the center stack, that look as good as they feel.
Alfa Romeo 4C
Think about the Audi R8 or any Ferrari: The steering wheel runs every relevant function. Hop into the Alfa Romeo 4C, and you’re in for a surprise when you grip a steering wheel devoid of buttons and knobs. The simplicity and the communicative unassisted steering get us every time.
Bentley Continental GT V8 S
Bentley is no stranger to exotic materials in its cars, and the Continental GT V8 S’ engine-turned aluminum dashboard is certainly a surprise in a modern car. It was executed impeccably.
Volvo XC90
The Volvo XC90’s headlights feature a distinctive LED design that’s been colloquially called Thor’s Hammer. It will also be a signature of the upcoming S90 sedan.
Ferrari F12 Berlinetta
No conversation about elegant design elements would be complete without at least one Ferrari. We particularly like the Aero Bridge, a pass-through that channels air from the hood down and out next to the doors of the Ferrari F12berlinetta.
Mercedes-Benz CLA250
In Cirrus White, the Mercedes-Benz CLA250 looks especially clean, and perhaps its the juxtaposition of light with dark, but the front grille makes the smallest of the automaker’s sedans seem far more upscale than it is.
