Last week, Ford patented a feature that would use the puddle lights, often referred to as ambient lighting, to showcase vehicle status messages. These lights usually light up when the doors of a vehicle are unlocked, illuminating the ground directly below, usually with the vehicle’s badge.
Ford, however, will use its new patent to have this puddle light display showcase an electric vehicle’s charge status. Normally, this information is displayed on the dashboard once the vehicle is turned on. Ford’s patented technology will use the puddle light to project the status of the drive battery on the surface just outside the vehicle, showing the driver how much of a charge is available when the vehicle is unlocked.
The patent also states that the automaker is looking into other alternatives for where the puddle light display will be projected. A wall or ceiling is a possibility if the projector light is positioned at an upward angle. Ford has noted that the preferred integration is in the side mirror or door handle as to create a better distance for the projected status. There is also a function that enables the driver to switch off the status light in favor of a pure light function.
The projection wouldn’t be limited to the battery charge status, but could also potentially display the predicted range based on driving style and distance travelled, battery temperature, and more. The projection can also be shown in color or be made to flash. A percentage display or clock-like display is also possible with the new patented technology.
