Hyundai is charging a premium for its luxury midsize sedan now that it’s positioned under the Genesis brand. The 2017 Genesis G80 is priced $2,650 higher than its predecessor, the Hyundai Genesis.
A 3.8-liter V-6, producing 311 hp and 293 lb-ft of torque, carries over as the base engine. Rear-wheel drive is standard on the base model costing $42,350, and all-wheel drive adds an extra $2,500. Models powered by four wheels automatically gain heated rear seats and a heated steering wheel.
Although the Genesis G80 may look virtually identical to the old model, the higher price tag gives you more than just a fancier badge. Automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, blind spot warning, high beam assist, and the rest of Hyundai’s safety suite are now standard across the range. Also standard is an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility.
A Premium package, which costs $4,750, adds LED fog lights, a 14-speaker Lexicon surround sound system, parking sensors, ventilated front seats, and a power tilt-and-slide panoramic sunroof. If you buy the Premium package, you can also tack on the Ultimate Package for another $4,200. That’ll give you upgraded leather seats, a full color head-up display, a larger 9.2-inch touchscreen, a 17-speaker sound system, power trunk lid, and other upgrades.
In addition to the V-6, the G80 offers a 5.0-liter V-8 engine rated at 420 hp and 383 lb-ft. Priced from $55,500, the G80 5.0 with the upgraded engine is only available in rear-wheel-drive configuration. It comes standard with its own Ultimate Package, which is similar to the one on the 3.8 model but also includes 19-inch alloy wheels, quad exhaust tips, and illuminated door sill plates.
The Genesis G80 rolls out to dealerships this month.
