2017 Mazda CX-5 Production Begins in Japan

The all-new 2017 Mazda CX-5 was just revealed a few weeks ago at the L.A. auto show, and Mazda has already started building the updated crossover. Production of the new CX-5 began at Mazda’s Ujina Plant No. 2 near Hiroshima, Japan. The model goes on sale in its home market beginning February 2017.

The original CX-5, which first entered production in November 2011, was the second-fastest Mazda to reach 1 million units, behind the Mazda3. By the end of October, a total of 1.57 million first-generation CX-5 crossovers had been produced, with the model accounting for roughly a quarter of Mazda’s annual sales volume.

The new CX-5 features an evolution of the company’s Kodo design language, with sharper lines and a slightly more raked profile. The biggest changes happen inside the vehicle, which receives more upscale materials and a floating central screen. Drivetrains are expected to carry over for the most part, but Mazda announced that the highly anticipated 2.2-liter Skyactiv-D turbodiesel engine will finally make it to the U.S. next year. The automaker says to expect hybrid levels of efficiency from the diesel option.

Following its introduction in Japan, the new CX-5 will roll out on our shores later in 2017.
