We Hear: 2018 Ford Mustang Axes V-6 Engine Option

The 2018 Ford Mustang will lose its V-6 engine option, according to dealer information obtained by Mustang6g. The writing has been on the wall for the 3.7-liter V-6, and now it appears Ford is officially making the turbocharged 2.3-liter EcoBoost I-4 the Mustang’s base engine.

A user on the Mustang6g forums posted the info, which comes from Ford’s ordering system. According to the user, the V-6 Mustang’s body code comes up as invalid in the system, suggesting it has been discontinued. This shouldn’t come as a huge surprise as the V-6 received very few changes when the 2015 Mustang debuted, and hasn’t received updates in the years since. The 3.7-liter V-6 currently makes 300 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque. That’s down from the 2.3-liter EcoBoost, which Ford has positioned as the upgrade engine with its 310 hp and 320 lb-ft.

The 10-speed automatic transmission again appears on the options list. That transmission, which was jointly developed by Ford and GM, will also be used on the 2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, Ford F-150 Raptor, and F-150 3.5 EcoBoost models. Another interesting tidbit is that the new Mustang can be equipped with the MagneRide magnetorheological dampers of the Shelby GT350. Also interesting is the appearance of a “Performance Package 2,” which comes in addition to the existing GT Performance Package. There are no details on what this package includes, but it could be Ford’s answer to the Chevy Camaro’s high-performance 1LE package.

New colors include Orange Fury, Royal Crimson, and Kona Blue. Sadly, Grabber Blue, which returned just last year, is no more.

A Ford spokesman was unable to confirm the info, saying only that there will be more news on the 2018 Ford Mustang closer to launch.
