Following up on the retro-inspired Prototype 9 from last year’s Pebble Beach show, Infiniti is cooking up another electrified concept that banks on nostalgia. Though Prototype 9 harkened back to the golden age of Grand Prix racing, this new concept appears to be going for a classic Le Mans racer look.
We only have this one overhead-view rendering to go off, but from it, we can see the concept will have an offset cockpit unlike the central seating position in the Prototype 9. A minimalist windscreen should give the driver some protection while they drive using the rectangular yoke-style steering wheel. Just behind the seat, there appears to be a vertical fin à la the Jaguar D-Type. It’s unclear how much of the car is shown in this rendering, but from the angle we have, it looks pretty narrow.
The concept was a joint effort between Infiniti’s Japan, U.S., and U.K. teams and was headed by Infiniti executive design director Karim Habib.
“Our new concept provides clues to where the Infiniti brand is heading,” said Habib, in a release. “For us, electrification means performance—our electrified cars will be powerful, efficient, and fun to drive, and the new concept is a physical representation of our electrified performance future.”
That’s all we know about the car so far, but hopefully, we’ll learn more as the brand releases more info ahead of its August 23 debut at the 2018 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.
