Subaru to Build New Three-Row Crossover in Indiana by 2018

Subaru is in need of a three-row crossover for its lineup as the Tribeca has since been retired. By 2018, the automaker will build an all-new model at its SIA plant in Lafayette, Ind. The new model has yet to be named, but Subaru says the vehicle will most likely “carry a name synonymous with outdoor adventure” in the same vein as Forester, Outback, and Crosstrek . It will also be larger than the Tribeca crossover it replaces.

For 2015, Subaru has seen its seventh consecutive year of sales records. The brand anticipates more than 550,000 sales by the end of the year, which would be three times the number sold in 2007. “We have enjoyed record sales for seven consecutive years and the introduction of an all-new, American-made Impreza followed by an all-new larger 3-row crossover will help keep our sales momentum strong,” said Thomas J. Doll, President and COO, Subaru North America, in a release.

At the SIA plant in Indiana, Subaru is currently on track to produce 228,000 units for 2015, with models including the Legacy, Outback, and new Impreza sedan. With the addition of the new three-row crossover and a redesigned Impreza hatchback coming in late 2016, production at the plant is expected to increase to 394,000 units annually.
