Amid its growing diesel scandal, Volkswagen is offering up “Goodwill” packages to owners of cars with 2.0-liter TDI engines.
Registered owners and lessees can sign up online for the package that includes a $500 Prepaid Visa Loyalty Card, $500 dealership card, and 24-hour roadside assistance for three years. After the award arrives through the mail, drivers will be instructed to take the cards to a VW dealership for activation.
“We sincerely hope you see this as a first step toward restoring your invaluable trust,” VW says on its dedicated dieselgate website, VWDieselInfo.com. Drivers looking to participate in the Goodwill package program must register by April 30, 2016.
The offer does not apply to the VW Touareg TDI, which is equipped with a 3.0-liter V-6 diesel engine. Although the Environmental Protection Agency alleges that cars with this engine also have “defeat devices” like the 2.0-liter units, Volkswagen has denied that claim.
Meanwhile, VW is still reeling from its worldwide scandal. Earlier this month, VW announced that as many as 800,000 of its vehicles may be affected by “irregularities in C02 levels.” That’s in addition to the Volkswagen vehicles that were found to have higher levels of nitrogen oxide emissions than permitted by U.S. regulations. VW faces more than 350 U.S. lawsuits thanks to dieselgate.
