Watch This 1,000+ HP Mazda MX-5 Radbul Drift on New Zealand Track

Professional drift driver and Goodwood Festival of Speed fan favorite “Mad Mike” Whiddett has built his Mazda MX-5 “Radbul” drift car from the ground up. Now, he returns to his home track in Cromwell, New Zealand after a year of development on his newest drift car here in the U.S.

The Radbul is based off the NC chassis, and while Whiddett and his team were originally going to place a turbocharged three-rotor 20B engine under the hood, similar to what’s in his RX-8 drift car, the team decided to take it one step further after seeing how much room was in the engine bay. Now, Whiddett’s MX-5 is powered by a bespoke 2.6-liter twin turbocharged four-rotor Mazda rotary engine that delivers over 1,000 hp.

In the video below, Whiddett pushes the Radbul on the challenging and technical track, and he even throws in a backwards drift at one point. All the while, Whiddett executes every move with style and precision, showing just what it takes to be a Formula Drift Pro driver.

“I’m so pumped to have been able to bring our RADBUL Mazda MX-5 back home to New Zealand to execute this clip on New Zealand’s premier race circuit, after such a solid development year with the car in the USA,” said Whiddett in a release.
