We reported last year that in addition to the more power T6 and T8 powertrains, Volvo was also considering a third engine for the U.S.-spec XC90. Now, Volvo has confirmed a new base engine for the U.S., the T5, which is a 2.0-liter turbo-four rated at 250 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. The new engine is paired exclusively to an eight-speed automatic transmission and will be available in front- and all-wheel-drive configurations. All XC90 T5 variants are only available with seating for five passengers while the XC90 T6 and T8 models can seat up to seven.
Pricing for the Volvo XC90 T5 starts at $44,945 in front-drive configuration while opting for all-wheel drive adds $2,000 to the car’s sticker price. Compared to the XC90 T6, the base front-drive T5 model is $3,850 cheaper. The XC90 T8 plug-in hybrid, on the other hand, is $22,150 more expensive than the front-drive XC90 T5. Fuel economy ratings for the XC90 T5 are 22/26 mpg city/highway for front-drive models and 22/25 mpg with all-wheel drive. The more powerful XC90 T6 with the 316-hp supercharged and turbocharged 2.0-liter I-4 isn’t that far behind at 20/25 mpg while the 400-hp XC90 T8 PHEV is the most efficient at 24/27 mpg.
Standard equipment for the XC90 T5 includes 18-inch alloy wheels, 10-way power adjustable front seats, a rearview camera, rear parking sensors, a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel, navigation, Bluetooth, cruise control, engine stop/start, Drive mode selector, lane departure warning, hands-free opening tailgate, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, keyless entry/start and a panoramic sunroof. Options include active bending full LED headlights, a Bowers & Wilkins audio system, a 360-degree view camera, heated front and rear seats, blind spot warning, adaptive cruise control with Pilot Assist, and a heated steering wheel.
