2017 Jaguar F-Pace Hits the Trails on New Ignition

Jaguar has been on a roll with its products lately, from the F-Type to the redesigned XF to the all-new XE sedan. But senior features editor Jonny Lieberman argues that Jaguar’s most important car of the 21st century isn’t a sedan or sports car, it’s an SUV. On this episode of “Ignition” we take a closer look at that vehicle, the 2017 Jaguar F-Pace.

We start in an F-Pace S AWD, which packs a supercharged 3.0-liter V-6 making 380 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque. Lieberman gushes about the F-Pace’s exterior styling, penned by Jaguar design boss Ian Callum. He can’t say the same for the interior, which he calls the F-Pace’s weakest link. Lieberman then takes the Jag to a mountain road, where he appreciates its rear-biased all-wheel drive system. He compliments the F-Pace on its canyon-carving abilities but concedes that the true measure of any SUV is its off-road prowess.

Lieberman trades the F-Pace S for a variant with taller tire sidewalls. The F-Pace isn’t really meant to be taken off pavement, but it’s perfectly capable of doing so thanks to engineering know-how from the Land Rover side of the business. The F-Pace inherits Land Rover’s Adaptive Surface Response and All Surface Progress Control systems, and is a much better off-road machine for it.
