Marchionne: All Ferrari Cars Will be Hybrids by 2019

As has been known for some time now, Ferrari plans to electrify its range to increase both performance and efficiency. Ferrari CEO Sergio Marchionne recently announced that most, if not all, prancing horses from 2019 on would get hybrid power.

Autocar reports that the CEO broke the news during a third quarter results conference call to investors. When the F12 Berlinetta is redesigned for 2020 it may be the first mainstream model to get a hybrid powertrain. As we previously reported, the evolution of the F12 that’s due in 2017 will make do with just a naturally aspirated V-12 engine.

Marchionne explained that combining traditional combustion engines and electric power would make Ferraris faster and more efficient. He also stated that the company would undergo a “fundamental shift” in the way that it builds cars in the future and estimates that production will ramp up — way up — in the next couple of years.

“Although I neither commit to this nor do I give any sort of certification of it being our objective, it is possible that the number could well be in excess of 10,000 cars in 2025,” Marchionne said, reports the U.K. mag.

Marchionne said that Ferrari is currently on its way to selling a record 8,000 vehicles in 2016, so an additional 2,000 by 2025 sounds like a realistic goal.

Will buyers go for all-hybrid Ferraris? It doesn’t seem like they’ll have much of a choice.
