No more free electric rides. Tesla announced an update to its supercharging program today. All models ordered after the end of 2016 will get annual credits at its supercharger network — good for about 1,000 miles. After that, owners will have to pay up to juice up their Tesla on the road.
Vehicles bought on or before January 1, 2017, will still get free charging. Tesla claims that the “small fee” to charge your Tesla quickly will still cost less than the price of a tank of gas in a comparable car.
The international network was introduced back in 2012. Today, there are 734 supercharger stations with 4,605 superchargers in use by more than 160,000 Tesla owners around the world.
“All cars will continue to come standard with the onboard hardware required for Supercharging. We will release the details of the program later this year, and while prices may fluctuate over time and vary regionally based on the cost of electricity, our Supercharger Network will never be a profit center,” the company stated on its website.
Tesla says the changes will not affect current owners or “any new Teslas ordered before January 1, 2017, as long as delivery is taken before April 1, 2017.”
The company still recommends charging your Tesla at home or at the office as one would charge a super cell phone with wheels. The supercharger network allows travelers fast charges that provides up to 170 miles of range in about 40 minutes.
“As we approach the launch of Model 3, this update will enable us to greatly expand our Supercharger Network, providing customers with the best possible user experience and bringing sustainable transport to even more people,” Tesla states.
So if you still want free charging while driving a Tesla across the U.S. or abroad, better get your order in before the end of the year deadline.
